PETALING JAYA: The monster storm that is Hurricane Matthew now has a matching monster image, which, according to CNN, has taken the internet by storm.
A rather menacing image of the hurricane, which is currently making landfall in the south-eastern United States, was posted by Weather Channel senior meteorologist Stu Ostro on his Twitter account on Tuesday.
In the colour-enhanced infrared snapshot, Hurricane Matthew resembles a human skull or the face of some sort of monster.
While the image is eerie, it is useful. According to CNN meteorologist Judson Jones, scientists make use of colour tables to find the strongest portions of the storm.
The skull’s ‘teeth’, as explained to CNN by Paul Meyer, an atmospheric scientist at NASA’s Earth Science Office, were in fact cold convective clouds.
